Welcome back to Pinned On Places! In today's article, we will be exploring the fascinating history and features of Caerphilly Castle in South Wales. Located in the town of Caerphilly, this formidable castle is surrounded by two huge lakes and is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and castle lovers alike.
A Medieval Marvel
Caerphilly Castle is one of the great medieval castles of Western Europe and holds several distinctions that make it truly remarkable. Firstly, it covers an immense area of over 30 acres, making it the second largest castle in Britain after Windsor. Its large-scale use of water for defense is also notable, as it is surrounded by two expansive lakes.
But what truly sets Caerphilly Castle apart is its architectural design. It is the first truly concentric castle in Britain, a style characterized by multiple walls and concentric rings of defense. This design made the castle virtually impenetrable during its heyday in the late 13th century and solidified its reputation as a masterpiece of military planning.

A Rich History
The construction of Caerphilly Castle began in 1268 under the order of Gilbert de Clare, Lord of Glamorgan. His goal was to secure the area and prevent it from falling into the hands of Welsh leader Prince Llewelyn the Last, who controlled most of mid and north Wales. Gilbert de Clare built several other castles in the region to reinforce his control.
Unfortunately, Gilbert de Clare did not live to see the completion of Caerphilly Castle. He passed away in 1295, and the castle and its estates were passed on to his son, also named Gilbert. Gilbert the Younger was killed in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, marking the end of the de Clare lineage.

As you wander through the castle, you'll be transported back in time to the medieval era. The Great Hall, with its lavish decoration and impressive acoustics, was a grand space where elegant dining parties took place. The State Apartments, remodeled by Hugo le Despenser in 1322, showcase the craftsmanship and architectural prowess of the time.
